SUMMARY:Climate Change Facilities and Programming
DESCRIPTION:Building in anticipation of climate change involves designing and constructing museums with the future impacts of climate change in mind. This proactive approach aims to enhance resilience reduce vulnerability\, and mitigate the potential negative effects of changing climatic conditions. \nDesigned by Caples Jefferson Architects and completed in 2014\, Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn was designed to be a balance between the existing\, 19th-century houses of the largest free Black communities in pre-Civil War America and to create a new 23\,000 sq ft complex that would include a museum and state of the art exhibition\, performance\, and education facilities. The buildings gravitate around the central landscaped area where past and present face each other and are bound together by the ever-changing farmland vegetation that evokes the agricultural heritage of the community. \nThe Climate Museum is the first museum in the United States dedicated to the climate crisis. Over the last five years\, the Museum has presented eight exhibitions and more than 300 events; engaged 350+ high school students in leadership\, advocacy\, and arts programs; and welcomed more than a hundred thousand visitors in-person and many more online. As the climate crisis intensifies\, so does the need for communal spaces where we can all gain understanding and resolve. The Climate Museum makes inclusive dialogue and immersive cultural programming on climate accessible to a broad public. \nThe Wild Center’s Youth Climate Program (YCP) is a global initiative that works to convene\, inspire\, and network young people through youth climate summits\, empowering them to lead and act on climate change solutions in their schools and communities. At the center of the program is a two-day retreat\, the annual Adirondack Youth Climate Summit that brings together over 200 high school and college students to learn about climate change. As a science-based organization\, The Wild Center is deeply concerned about how changes in one of the major pillars that support the natural world will impact life on Earth. From Youth Climate Summits to creating solutions to environmental issues through our Building a Greener Adirondacks initiative\, The Wild Center is making strides toward a sustainable future. \nRegister Here

Hendricks: Portraits at the Frick from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. \nBarkley L. Hendricks (1945–2017) revolutionized contemporary portraiture with his vivid depictions of Black subjects that emphasize the dignity and individuality of his sitters. Beginning in the late 1960s\, his work drew from and challenged traditions of European art\, and The Frick Collection—with its iconic portraits by Rembrandt\, Bronzino\, Van Dyck\, and others—was one of his favorite museums. \nThe exhibition\, “celebrates and explores the remarkable work of this pioneering American painter with an unprecedented display of paintings drawn from private and public collections.” Organized by Aimee Ng\, Curator at the Frick\, and Consulting Curator Antwaun Sargent\, Barkley L. Hendricks: Portraits at the Frick considers the complex place of European painting in Hendricks’s art and the evolving role of the Frick in modern American culture. \nThis tour is free for Museum Hue members\, and non-members must pay $5 admission to secure their spot. This tour only has space for 15 museumgoers due to limited spots; we urge interested attendees only to register if they are confident of availability on October 6\, from 5 — 7 pm. If 15 people register this event will be at capacity\, but please email hello@museumhue.com to be added to the waitlist and a member of the team will contact you pending available space. \nWe look forward to being in community with you.
